Marjorie K - Queen of All She Surveys

There are numerous titles or agrandements that you could associate with our Marjorie K, she has a definite presence being the largest of our exhibits taking pride of place right in the middle of the exhibition centre here that is Futureworld. That of a Queen first comes to mind, magestic and proud surveying all her other exhibit subjects. If she had a personality maybe she would be the Diva of the centre, unique, special and always in the limelight, the centre of attention. I think perhaps she is the Grande Dame here, not a burlesque-like dame but one that has been knighted or 'dameified' possesing a dignity and demeanor of one that has made a significant contribution to the wellbeing of society, in Marjorie's case her contribution to the development of solar energy and the fazing out of fossil fuel use in marine transportation.

Of course it's the people behind the Marjorie K that deserve the praise, for developing a prototype catamaran that ran not on the power of the wind but the power of the sun. Naturally there's nothing wrong with wind power but the success of adapting and using solar energy to power such a sizeable vessel like Marjorie has grown into bigger and better things for the people and company involved with Marjorie from the beginning. That company is Solar Sailor and has since turned from a catarmaran that can transport a few people to the larger scale catarmaran ferries used everyday on Sydney Harbour. This is very exciting for anyone with an interest and passion in solar energy use in a commercial application such as public transport.

Just imagine how much greenhouse gas could be saved from entering our atmosphere and the other pollutants that come from using diesel fuel from entering our waterways if all the diesel fuelled boats were fitted out to run on solar. It would be just amazing. At the moment though as with all things solar, cost is the primary limiting factor in achieving this. Looking though at what remarkable progress has been made to show that solar energy does and can work it's only a matter of time to see these constraints overcome. Futureworld is dotingly proud to have the Marjorie K as the centrepiece of the exhibit, she and all the people behind her represent what Futureworld is wanting to promote and raise the profile of within the community, our schools and business. That is, the development and incorporation of sustainable clean energies and pratices thoughout our home, business and school lives.

All the information you will ever need to know about Marjorie is available here as well video presentations and from time to time seminars from the people at Solar Sailor who built her. So come in and see her in all her resplendant glory - The Queen, the Diva or The Grande Dame...you decide.
