Green Thumbs Abound!!! All Without Lifting a Finger

What would you say to having a garden that uses less water but looks just as green and vibrant, needs less fertiliser and produces just as much fruit, vegies and flowers just as succulent and colourful as before and saves you using and having to store all those dangerous pesticides and other toxic chemicals around the house. I'm guessing you would say that's a gardener's dream but not a reality. Here at Futureworld, we say that it is a reality and we also say that you will hardly ever need to use that shovel, spade or trowel to get the same if not better results. That's the message of our No-Dig Garden.

So how does the garden use less water and look just as green and healthy? The garden itself doesn't use any less water but from the town or city water reservoir's point of view, the water used by the garden is much reduced due to the fact that water from rainwater collection tanks is used instead. Pretty cool huh? And what about fertilser? Well the compost produced from household food scraps and garden clippings is one of nature's best fertilisers. It's essentially free and so much better for your garden than those refined synthetic ones. It's like putting your garden on a diet of wholesome grains instead of refined white flour and sugars. You know what happens if you eat too much of that stuff!!

We all know the dangerous and harmful effects of most of the pesticides and other noxious chemicals used to control pests and weeds in your garden. Alot of these are extremely poisonous and take a considerable amount of time to break down. Once they are applied to the garden they invariably end up in our stormwater, leach through the soil to the water table underneath or stay in the soil around our gardens. This is definitely not a healthy thing. But there are a few alternatives to consider. There are several nature-based pesticides that are still poisonous but they break down very rapidly into very environmentally friendly elements. Some of these pesticides are only toxic to a specific pest so people, animals and other friendly insects are unaffected. There are also ways you can encourage and populate your garden with animals and insects which will happily devour the undesirable pests in your garden.

All of these alternatives add up to a garden that looks great without the harmful side effects and drain on our water resources. It's a goal of Futureworld to encourage and promote these practices not only for your household garden but also on larger scale farms. There are many small to medium sized organic farms that have always used many of these practices to everyone's benefit but it is the larger scale commercial operations that use the bulk of synthetic pesticdes and fertiliers which end up in our waterways and degrade our soil. There is progress being made with more and more farms changing their practices. With an increased awareness, incentives and an increased demand for more organic produce the change by all of our farms will be sooner rather than later.

So come in and see our blooms for yourself. Maybe you can get a few tips of how and what you can change in your own garden as well as find out what's going on in Australia's largest vegies patches, orchards and farms. Who knows, we might make a Green Thumb out of you without you hardly lifting a finger!!
